Minor Frenzy Erupts as Kathy Sledge Sings "We Are Family"

By Rex Wockner

West Hollywood -- More than 350,000 people hit the streets of West Hollywood June 28 for the 28th annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Celebration.

They were joined by Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, L.A. City Councilman Mike Hernandez, L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and L.A. Police Chief Bernard Parks, who marched with the gay cops and firemen group, the Golden State Peace Officers Association.

lapride98.jpg - 22.80 KA two-day festival jammed West Hollywood Park with food, live music, dancing, cruising and earnest activists in booths offering information on everything from the federal Employment Non- Discrimination Act to the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians.

Vendors hawked genital jewelry, pride cigars, rainbow paraphernalia -- lots of rainbow paraphernalia -- and lesbian folk music, among much else.

A minor frenzy ensued Saturday night at the main stage when Kathy Sledge of the 70s disco group Sister Sledge sang two extended remixes of the gay mega-anthem "We Are Family."

During the second remix, scores of ecstatic homosexuals jumped up on the stage with her and both she and they appeared to be in nothing short of Seventh Heaven.

Also on Saturday night, the 4th annual Dyke March brought 400 lesbians to Santa Monica Boulevard. They were led by a sizeable contingent of helmetless Dykes On Bikes who revved their engines and rattled the windows of WeHo's trendy shops.
