Anti-Gay U.S. Constitutional Amendment |
Compiled By GayToday Washington, D.C.-The 45-member advisory board, representing a coalition planning to introduce an anti-same-sex Federal Marriage Amendment this week, includes leaders of major black denominations, an Episcopal bishop, several Roman Catholic officials, and representatives of both Jewish and Muslim groups. Thus, fundamentalist zealots from many venues are convening July 12 to announce their campaign which hopes to amend the United States Constitution so that it will explicitly forbid all same-sex marriages. Concerned that the legal system might soon support gay and lesbian marriage rights, a coalition that includes not only religious leaders but conservative family-policy pundits wants to amend the Constitution, asserting marriages are suitable only when they take place between a man and a woman. Ratification of the Federal Marriage Amendment must be effected by both houses of Congress as well as the legislatures of 38 states in order to pass muster. Fundamentalist zealots have been made uneasy by the passing last year of a Vermont law permitting same sex civil unions. The religious zealots admit that even under the best of circumstances, their campaign to enshrine opposition to same-sex relationships in the constitution, will require a struggle lasting several years.
