Australia:
Fertility Clinic Security Guard Murdered

Compiled By GayToday

Melbourne, Australia-An unidentified murderer shot and killed Steve Rogers, a 44 year-old unarmed security guard at the Wellington Parade, a Fertility Control Clinic. Two men who were present in the clinic's waiting room showed what homicide Detective Inspector Brian Rix called "outstanding bravery" by wrestling the killer to the floor and disarming him. A man is arrested after the fatal shooting of security guard Steve Rogers.

The brave men, said the inspector, had probably prevented a massacre, inasmuch as the intruder was reportedly armed to shoot many.

Approximately 30 persons had been in the clinic at the time of the gunman's entry. Anti-abortion 'Pro Life' groups, in a routine that is now well-known in the U.S., denied any involvement in the clinic murder. An anti-choice group which parades under the name of Helpers of God's Precious Infants, has been protesting daily outside the clinic for seven years, waving plastic fetuses and walking squeezed between sandwich boards lettered with their anti-choice slogans.

The Helpers of God's Precious Infants had knelt and prayed before the murderer entered the clinic, and had then left the area for the remainder of the day.

The murdered man, survived by both a partner and by children, had started working at the clinic only three weeks beforehand, according to The Age, an Australian newspaper. He was pronounced dead before an ambulance arrived.

Margaret Tighe, chair of another group calling itself Right to Life, dismissed the murder as something to be expected.

"We would never condone this behavior," she said, "but (the clinic) is a place of immense violence and it is little wonder that this has occurred…Some people will take the law into their own hands."

The Women's Electoral Lobby expressed its outrage, its convenor, Lisa Solomon telling The Age that she was shocked that such a murder could happen in Melbourne.
