gaymiliary.gif - 12.42 K Phoenix, Arizona--The Acting Under-Secretary for Memorial Affairs in the National Cemetery Administration, Mr. Roger Rapp, has accepted the design and authorized the donation of a memorial here for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Veterans of the U.S. Armed Services.

This memorial will be dedicated to all veterans who have served with honor and pride and will be dedicated at the National Memorial Cemetery in Arizona on Veterans Day, November 11, 2000.

In approving the donation, Mr. Rapp stated:

"The design of the proposed boulder conforms precisely to the established National Cemetery Administration criteria for size, shape, and material.

"The proposed inscription is non-offensive and clearly commemorates veteran service. The donor organization--Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Veterans of America --is an established nationwide veterans group which has a National Constitution and Bylaws. It appears that the organization is primarily patriotic in nature and its objective is to commemorate military service."

The Rainbow Memorial will be located in the founder's plaza of the National Cemetery in north Phoenix. It will be a boulder-shaped monument, made of rainbow granite.

On its face will be inscribed:

"VETERANS MEMORIAL, In Memory of all Veterans who served with courage and pride, donated by the Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Veterans of America."

"It is with great honor and pride that I have the pleasure of making this announcement," said Wally Straughn, President of the Phoenix Chapter of Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Veterans of America.
