What is the Policy Institute of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force?

The Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) is a think tank dedicated to strengthening movements for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) equality. The Policy Institute achieves this through 3 programs--Research and Policy Analysis; Public Information and Communications; and Strategic Initiatives. The Policy Institute generates groundbreaking reports and thought papers; distributes critical and accurate information to activists, elected officials and government agencies, the media, and progressive organizations; convenes strategy meetings; and develops new ideas for political and cultural advocacy.

The Policy Institute is located in New York City and is a program of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), located in Washington, DC. NGLTF has worked to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people at the local, state and national level since its inception in 1973. As part of a broader social justice movement for freedom, justice and equality, NGLTF is creating a world that respects and celebrates the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society.

What is the Policy Institute's Research Fellowship Program?

There are 3 main areas for fellows to concentrate:

Policy, legal, and social science research on issues including: family policy, voting behavior and representation, racial and economic justice, aging issues, hate violence, workplace issues, and health policy. Issues vary based on research priorities. A research fellow will work closely with the Research and Policy Analysis Director to locate critical social science data and analyze policy issues affecting GLBT people.

The Public Information and Communications program uses new technologies and public relations strategies to distribute the ideas and analyses of the Policy Institute to journalists, policy makers, academics and activists across the country. A fellow concentrating in this area will work closely with the Public Information Director to increase the breadth and depth of the Policy Instituteˇ¦s distribution network and assist in laying out public relations strategies for Policy Institute projects.

Community Organizing. These strategic projects catalyze the development of new strategies to advance the GLBT movement through the National Policy Roundtable; the National Religious Leadership Roundtable; the Racial and Economic Justice Initiative; the Training Academy; the Family Policy Program; the Aging Initiative; and the Apuzzo Chair for Leadership In Public Policy. A fellow concentrating in this area will play a key role with a project leader to produce needed research, meeting organizing, and communications materials with initiative participants. Fallˇ¦00 fellows will concentrate on campaign organizing in the Training Academy.

The Policy Institute has graduate and undergraduate internships available each school session and summer for college and university students or recent graduates covering a variety of disciplines. Internships are generally located in New York City; other internships for the Policy Institute may be available in NGLTF's national headquarters in Washington, DC.

Course credit for the internship will depend on the policies of the particular institution the student is attending. It is the intern's responsibility to provide the Policy Institute with the proper paperwork necessary to receive course credit. The Policy Institute Intern Coordinator will provide an evaluation of the intern's work in accordance with the institution's standards and procedures.
