Drag Queens to Appear in the Olympics

Between 40 and 200 drag queens will appear in the closing ceremonies of the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, October 15 during a segment celebrating Australian movies.

Some will wear gowns from the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

"This element of the show is only a tiny part of a huge celebration and for the right-wing reactionaries, or whatever part of the community is outraged about it, they're always going to be outraged," ceremony director Ric Birch told Reuters.
Mexican City Bans Dogs and Homosexuals from Pool

The Mexican city of Aguascalientes, capital of the state of the same name, has banned dogs and homosexuals from the Ojo Caliente swimming area on the city's east side, the Mexico City daily newspaper La Jornada reported August 25.

The policy is reportedly posted on a sign at the site.

City Director of Regulations Jorge Alvarez Medina told the newspaper he opposes "this type of people" and "will not allow access to homosexuals."

The president of the Council of Non-Governmental Organizations of Aguascalientes, Rocio de la Mora, denounced the reported ban and urged gays to protest.

"It is not right that homosexuals are being discriminated against in this manner, and as long as they do not behave badly, they should be allowed access to any public place," he said.

The organization Let's Make A New Town Together also denounced the reported policy.

"We are against this homophobic campaign," said the group's president, Gabriel Martinez Valdivia. "You can't treat a person like a dog. It's not a crime to be gay."

After the story broke, Aguascalientes Mayor Luis Armando Reynosa reportedly told local journalists that "this information was not disseminated by any public official of the current administration ... and there has been no instruction to drop any one from society for engaging in homosexual sexual conduct."
Slovak Justice Minister Denigrates Gays

Slovak Justice Minister Jan Carnogursky said August 17 that homosexual partnerships will not be registered in Slovakia, according to the Czech news agency CTK, reported RainbowNewtork.com.

Carnogursky said granting gay couples equal rights would "degrade" heterosexual families and encourage people to go gay, which would be a bad thing because "they would not have an easy life."

He added that official recognition of gay partnerships would result in fewer children being born which would weaken the social system because there would be fewer people to contribute to pension funds.

Finally, Carnogursky said, the best thing to do is classify gays as "sick people" so insurance companies will pay for "treatment" to rid them of their "illness."
