London, England--BBC lawyers have ordered a mildly risqué joke about Tory leader William
("Little Willy") Hague to be cut from last night's edition of comedian
Mark Lamarr's show, Lamarr's Attacks (BBC 2, Monday 4 September, 10pm).
The quip was part of an exchange between Lamarr and guest interviewee, gay
rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. |

In response to Lamarr's query about the causes of homophobia, Tatchell cited
research by Professor Henry Adams of the University of Georgia in the US, which
found that 80% of men who were strongly homophobic were secret, repressed
homosexuals.
Professor Adams took a group of men, all of whom said they were totally
heterosexual and hated gays, and wired them to a plethysmograph (a penile
circumference measuring device which records sexual arousal). He then showed
them gay porn videos and found that eight out of ten got erections.
Adams concluded that homophobia is a displaced form of homosexuality where a
person projects onto others fear and loathing of their own same-sex desires.
Tatchell joked with Lamarr that he would like to try this test on prominent
homophobes. He suggested William Hague, in view of his homophobic support
for Section 28 and his opposition to gay marriage.
Referring to Hague as "Little Willy", Tatchell said: "It might be
interesting to see how Little Willy would respond to such a test". Lamarr
quipped back: "Yeah, but he might not stay Little Willy."
Despite Tatchell adding the caveat that William Hague could be one of the
20% of homophobic men who were not repressed gays, BBC lawyers were unhappy
with the references to the Tory party leader. As a result, all mention of
William Hague was cut from last night's edition of Lamarr's Attacks.
