Murdered New Yorker
Remembered at Candlelight Vigil

Compiled by GayToday

New York, New York-A silent candlelight vigil was held in Queens Thursday night in memory of Edgar (Eddie) Garzon, beaten by one of two men as he was on his way home during the early morning hours of August 15 after emerging from a gay bar in Jackson Heights. Until last Tuesday when he died, he'd remained unconscious at Elmhurst Hospital Center.

A lead pipe or baseball bat are believed to have been used on him. Police are investigating the 35-year old Columbian native's death as a hate crime.

Thursday's vigil was was sponsored by a coalition of New York City organizations, including Mano a Mano and the Colombian Lesbian and Gay Association (COLEGA).

A stage set designer, he was known as a creative talent, proud of his Columbian heritage. Though he lived alone Garzon is being mourned by a large circle of friends. After leaving Friends Tavern, he was attacked at 77th Street and 37th Avenue, several blocks from the bar. His attackers lifted his wallet and fled.

Reward money, so far totaling nearly $3,000, has been collected by the Jackson Heights gay community and will be paid for any information that leads to the arrests of the two suspects.

Andres Duque, a coordinator for Mano a Mano and a Garzon's friend, said Jackson Heights has a reputation as a tolerant area where people of differing backgrounds live in peace.

Daniel Dromm, a co-chair of the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee says that Garzon's death marks the third such gay-bashing killing in the borough in the past ten years. The most memorable murder, perhaps, was that of Julio Rivera who was fatally beaten and stabbed in Jackson Heights in 1990.

"It's very upsetting and frightening to see there is still such hatred and homophobia in the city," said City Councilwoman Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan).
