Netherlands Lower House Approves Same Sex Marriages
Compiled by GayToday

The Hague, The Netherlands—Legislators in the lower house of government here have overwhelmingly approved the legalization of same-sex marriages. The historic move makes the Dutch the first people in the world to insure full equality for homosexual love by making same-sex marriage the equal of opposite-sex marriage. The Dutch law includes the legality of adoptions that are made in the Netherlands plus all other benefits and privileges accorded to opposite-sex couples. Reportedly passed 109-33, the measure is an affirmation that has become widely accepted in a nation that has long been blessed by having sane, practical policies that approach sexuality without undue modesty and embarrassment, embracing it as a natural and wholesome part of life.

Fundamentalist Dutch politicians fumed angrily about what they labeled an ending of Biblical traditions.

When the vote had been tallied, a gallery filled with onlookers broke enthusiastically into applause. Politicians approvingly and noisily thumped their desks. Now, according to Dutch reports, gay couples will be free to change their ``registered same-sex partnerships'' into marriages that are fully recognized by the national government.

The new law requires upper house approval, which is considered certain, and will become effective in 2001.
