Jerry Falwell Urges Zealots
to Oppose Hate Crime Law

falwellnew.jpg - 9.35 K The Rev. Jerry Falwell Lynchburg, Virginia—The Rev. Jerry Falwell e-mailed his followers Tuesday urging them in a “confidential” communication to contact their representatives in the U.S. Congress and to tell them to vote against the passage of the Hate Crimes bill.

Falwell said: “ I have just learned that members of the House of Representatives are set to vote late today (Sept. 12) on a motion sponsored by gay-activist Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass. that would support hate-crimes legislation pushed through in the Senate by Sen. Ted. Kennedy, D-Mass.

“Pro-family groups are urging their supporters to contact their representatives IMMEDIATELY -- within the next hour if possible -- to ask them to vote AGAINST the Frank motion.”

Falwell's primary fear is that the Hate Crimes bill approved Wednesday will pave the way to job security for gay men and lesbians, which he dismissively calls “pro-homosexual legislation.” He wrote:

"If the House passes this legislation and it is signed by President Clinton --as he surely will--it will mark the first time that 'sexual orientation' will have been voted into law as a civil rights category. That would set the stage for the Employment Non- Discrimination Act (ENDA) and other pro-homosexual legislation that will eventually result in the criminalization of Christianity.

The founder of the so-called Moral Majority noted that the Bible supports hateful acts against persons who make love to members of their own sex. He said:
