Florida Sheriff Attacks Gays with Taxpayer Funds

Compiled By GayToday

shfmcdougall.jpg - 6.36 K Sheriff John McDougall Ft. Myers, Florida--Equality Florida, a statewide social justice organization, is calling for the resignation/ removal from office of John McDougall, the Lee County Sheriff who is using taxpayer's money to attack gays and lesbians, feminists, civil libertarians and anyone who does not share religious beliefs identical to his own.

On an official web site, McDougall recently posted a lengthy, rambling screed entitled "WAKE UP AMERICA! BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!"

Signed by McDougall, the rant decries gays and lesbians, the American Civil Liberties Union and pro-choice activist and lashes out at what he calls "rabid feminists" and the "United Nations one-world government radicals."

Equality Florida is also requesting that Governor Jeb Bush and Attorney General Bob Butterworth launch an official inquiry into McDougall's conduct.

"The web site not only destroys the community's faith in a fair and impartial legal system, it violates the U.S. Constitution provisions that prohibit government officials from using their positions to promote specific religious beliefs," said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida.

"These attacks are mean-spirited coming from anyone, but particularly irresponsible and troubling coming from a law enforcement official," said Smith.

"An individual elected to uphold the law who shows such disregard for the Constitution should not be in office."

McDougall's web-published editorial goes on to make increasingly strident claims...

"...be aware, there is an insidious diabolical scheme supported by media moguls, and Washington politicos that are robbing us of our true religious heritage and Constitutional freedoms," McDougall warns.

However, it is his specific promotion of his personal religion at taxpayer expense that runs afoul of well-established case law, including the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in County of Allegheny v. American Civil Liberties Union Greater Pittsburgh Chapter, according to religious and constitutional experts.

That ruling pointed out Constitutional prohibitions against public officials endorsing any religious point of view.
"Equality Florida is a state-wide organization that works to achieve social, political and economic justice and that is dedicated to ending oppression based on sexual orientation, race, class and gender."
