Gays and lesbians in Mexico City on Saturday got very close to Climax but couldn't go all the way. Citing code and liquor violations, the gay disco 'Box' was shut down October 11 and the planned Climax party-presentation was canceled. While a hundred or more early revelers waited for the club to open at 11PM, a squadron of four police trucks and one paddy wagon arrived to serve legal notice and seal the doors shut. During the hour-long wait, surprised Diesel models, Los Angeles DJ Greg Ellsworth, and sponsorship representatives socialized outside with party boys and glamorous girls, all eager to enjoy one of Mexico's most innovative clubs. Yet remaining are several unanswered questions to an unnecessary late-night show of force. Curious too, that for a legal notice of closure dated October 6th, it took all week to deliver this "legal" advisory to the club. 'Box' owners, managers of the adjacent restaurant-bar that has been open for over three years without incident, are available all week long, days and nights. When officials discovered that the two locations are connected inside, they proceeded to close both properties to prevent the management from any alternative operation. Employees were most upset, apprehending one official exiting the club with a poorly-hidden liquor bottle in his flak jacket and nearly inciting a riot. But disappointed heads remained cool until all doors had been pasted with a large, fluorescent orange 'clausurado' (Closure) notice and 'Box' managers finally announced cancellation of the night's special events, inviting everyone back next weekend. The event's promoter summed it up, "Of course we're very disappointed that the city aims to ruin legitimate and exciting places for gays and lesbians, especially when there are more urgent conditions in the city. "While our other activities have been great fun, it's a shame that I couldn't present this special night... (but) everyone associated with Climax hopes to overcome this latest challenge." He added that he is considering alternative locations and dates in Mexico for Climax '98. Climax, Mexico annual circuit party, aims to raise funds for Alianza, the business and professional organization in the gay-lesbian community. Sponsors include Sauza Tequila, Tower Records, and Diesel Jeans as well as the Mexican Government Tourist Office. |
