Did Georgie say he would not knowingly hire queers? Log Cabiners hope not. |
Washington, D.C.— Republican Presidential candidate George W. Bush, Jr. has said he won't "knowingly" hire a homosexual according to a Washington Times report by conservative columnist Cal Thomas. The reputed Bush statement has placed the candidate's Log Cabin gay supporters in an embarrassing position. |
On April 9, the New York Times had quoted Bush as expressing his willingness to appoint a gay man or a lesbian to a high position in his administration. More recently, however, in an address to the Madison
Project, a group of 15 influential "Christian Republicans" Bush appears to have flip flopped, rejecting his previous equal employment rights stance.
Taking one position not altogether satisfactory to his "Christian Republican" listeners, however, Bush is also reported to have said that "neither would he dismiss anyone who was discovered to be a homosexual after being named to a position."
Bush has taken other anti-gay positions including a promise that he'd veto all attempts to repeal
the Texas sodomy law. The Republican candidate also opposes gay adoption and the addition of sexual orientation protections in hate crimes legislation. The New Jersey Supreme Court decision requiring the Boy Scouts to admit gays, he believes, was wrong.
Log Cabin's Executive Director, Rich Tafel, wants clarification from Bush which has thus far not
been forthcoming. "We have to consider that the religious right is trying to keep people on
board for Bush," Tafel told Lisa Keen of the Washington Blade, "so I'm asking the Bush campaign to verify the comments. It certainly contradicts what he said on the record for the NewYork Times. But if he said something to that effect, it would be very, very bad. I just don't want to jump on it until we get a clear response from the campaign."

Tafel admitted that Bush's reported comments have caused consternation among gay Log Cabin members who'd already contributed money to his campaign and who'd been planning to devote their energies
to its success.
