Speaks Out for Equality |

President Ford was the last Republican head of state to support the Equal Rights Amendment. He comes from a generation of moderate Republicans whose ranks have dwindled dramatically since the Reagan era. "It is heartening to know that Gerald Ford supports equality under federal law for gay and lesbian Americans," said Chad Johnson, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director. "Let's hope that President Bush will follow his wise advice, and stop pandering to the radical right. Instead of taking a few token and quiet actions on gay issues, he should boldly follow the Democratic example to support ENDA and other lgbt rights measures," said Johnson.
"I have always believed in an inclusive policy, in welcoming gays and others into the party," he told Deb Price, "I think the party has to have an umbrella philosophy if it expects to win elections." |
