Moldova Police Break Up Meeting of Gay Organization

The first public meeting of Moldova's only legal gay organization, GenderDoc-M, was broken up by Kishinev police September 23 at the Public Art Library because activists were unable to produce the group's official registration documents.

"Sexual minorities are not protected in any way," said GenderDoc- M Director Max Anmegikyan. "We are outlawed, the lowest caste possible, pedophiles and criminals."

He hopes Americans might lend a hand.

"Gay and lesbian America has a big heart and their support can be very helpful," he said. "Letters of support sent to genderdoc@mail.md can help because our authorities have a mixture of respect and fear toward America.

“Established contacts could also help us lobby the U.S. Embassy in requesting some money for our projects. Most important, of course, is moral support. It is very useful sometimes to feel you are not alone and there's somebody to back you up."

Moldova was formerly part of the Soviet Union.
Korea: Openly Gay Actor Warms to New Role

Hong Suk-chon, the well-known Korean actor who became the nation's first out-of-the-closet public figure in September, is warming to his new role.

"I at least have gotten people talking about homosexuality," Hong said November 3. "I dream of a day when parents tell their kids that homosexuals are no freaks."

Hong, 29, came out in an interview with a monthly publication on the condition that editors hold the story until he had time to come out to his parents. But before he had a chance to speak to them, a daily newspaper broke the story.

Immediately afterward, Hong broke down during a TV interview and said: "I really tried to live properly, but I've failed. I'm sorry. If you find that you don't like me anymore, I don't know what I'll do. I'm so emotionally worn out. I'm so sorry to the audience, who trusted me and feel betrayed."

He's feeling better now.

"I was so sorry at the time for causing concern to the people around me, especially my parents," he said. "In the first few days, the reaction was such that I thought people might attack me when they saw me on the streets. But I have since learned that there are many supporters too."
Philippine Police Go Undercover

Philippine cops went undercover as homosexuals November 5 to catch strippers dancing naked at the Malabon gay bar Bobelle's Disco.

Ten men were arrested and charged with indecent exposure and illegal public exhibition.

The bar likely will be shut down, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Thai Lady Party Draws 400

Bangkok's day-long Lady Party 2000 drew 400 lesbians to the Hera Club on Ratchadaphisek Road November 4.

But it wasn't all fun and games. The lesbian organization Anjaree announced plans to launch a gay-awareness campaign in public schools.

"Homosexuals exist in every age group, but most of those who declare themselves homosexual are teenagers," Anjaree coordinator Chantarak Raksayu told the Bangkok Post.

The day also included stage entertainment, a fancy-dress contest, a Miss Popular contest and a dance.
