Kampala, Uganda—The Evangelical Fellowship of Uganda and the National Fellowship of Born Again Churches held a debate at The Sheraton Hotel here Sunday to which members of Parliament, academic leaders, and clergymen were invited. The subject matter, as advertised, was: "The Homosexual Challenge in Uganda: Some Biblical and Secular Perspectives" The existence of homosexuals in Uganda, was highlighted with fanfare September 27 when President Yoweri Museveni ordered police to arrest and prosecute persons who, in Wandegeya, were said to be involved in a same-sex marriage ceremony. Gay and lesbian issues then burst unexpectedly into the Ugandan media, and President Museveni softened his stand November 16 during an international conference in Durban, South Africa. There, he told reporters that gays and lesbians would be free to live out their sexual orientations as long as they "did it quietly".
As if to call attention to his own predilection for persecuting homosexuals, the Ugandan Minister of Security, Muluri Mukasa, has publicly labeled those who are emotionally and sexually attracted to persons of their own gender as "pigs." |
