PFC Barry Winchell (above) was murdered in his sleep by Private Calvin Glover |
Ft. Campbell, Kentucky—Private Calvin Glover, 18, after pleading innocent to
premeditated murder, has now entered a 'guilty' plea to a charge less serious in the
barracks-baseball bat-beating death, while he lay sleeping, of 21-year old Private
First Class Barry Winchell.
Pfc. Barry Winchell, who was said by his barracks mates to have been gay, had on the previous day, worsted Private Glover in a fist fight. Glover had been heard by others to say "I hate faggots."
Witnesses from the barracks murder-scene have already provided military authorities with what
seems a clear cut case against Glover.

Now Glover hopes, by admitting his 'partial guilt', to lessen the severity of an eventual
punishment that lies in store for him. The accused private is claiming he is guilty only of
unpremeditated murder.
Now, however, the military establishment itself is being even more carefully scrutinized by an
outside world eager to see if, in this Eagles case, it exemplifies that kind of justice
which treats each citizen's rights with an equal concern.
