Returns to The Advocate Controversial Critic is Named 'Editor at Large' Newsmagazine Celebrates a Re-Addition to Its Staff |

Author and cultural critic, Michelangelo Signorile has been named Editor-at-Large of The Advocate, the nation's oldest continuously published gay and lesbian newsmagazine, it has been announced by Judy Wieder, Editor-in-Chief of The Advocate. The occasion marks the second time in the magazine's history that Signorile will be writing regularly for the publication. As editor-at-large Signorile will survey the gay and lesbian political and cultural scene in his travels, offering his observations and ideas about our rapidly changing world in articles, interviews, and commentaries designed to appear in the magazine throughout the year.
Rarely one to shy from controversy, Signorile is best known for his provocative journalism and commentary. His inaugural piece for The Advocate's "Year in Review" issue (now on stands, "What Happened to Gay?"is both vintage Signorile and vintage Advocate: a look at the buzzwords that became the hallmarks of 1998--ex-gay, too gay and postgay— and what forces motivated them, propelled them, and ultimately brought their demise. Signorile is the author of three best-selling books: Queer in America, Outing Yourself and his most recent, Life Outside, which was a finalist for the 1998 New York Public Library/Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. In addition to writing a column for The Advocate from 1991 through 1993, Signorile has written for The New York Times, OUT, The New York Observer, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, and Newsday. |
