Interior Secretary raises the Pride flag for first time over the department’s headquarters

The decision is a big difference from the policy of her Trump-appointed predecessors, including one who removed sexual orientation from the department’s anti-discrimination policy.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland recognized Flag Day on June 14 by raising the Progress Pride flag over the Department of the Interior headquarters in Washington, D.C. It is reportedly the first time any Pride flag was waved on department property in its 172-year history.

Haaland, the first Native American leader of the department overseeing policies affecting many Indigenous tribes and the first Native American serving as secretary in a Presidential cabinet, wrote on social media, “Today we celebrate love.”

“For the first time ever, the Progress Pride Flag is raised over Interior,” she said, including a picture of her and security as they sent the flag up. “Happy Pride!”

Haaland’s choice of the Progress Pride flag also made it the second time the Progress Pride flag has flown on federal government property this month. The Department of Energy’s secretary Jennifer Grisholm raised that flag above the agency’s headquarters earlier this month.
