From “sacrilegious” to inspiring, how David Archuleta’s view of George Michael evolved since coming out

David Archuleta celebrated the 35th anniversary of George Michael‘s legendary “Freedom! ’90” by dropping a dazzling new cover earlier this month.

But it’s not just a tribute to an iconic ’90s anthem, it’s a thesis statement that speaks to his lease on life, new music, and upcoming memoir.

In a conversation with fellow singer (and ex-Mormon) Loren Allred for LADYGUNN, the 34-year-old explained that coming out and leaving the church helped him understand Michael’s career in a new way.

“I did not relate to [George Michael] growing up,” he said. “He’s singing about, ‘I want your sex,’ and ‘I got to have faith.’ I was like, that’s sacrilegious.” LOL.
